THE MATCHDAY ANSWER

Scouting

Define the football job, the deadline and the total cost first. Then assign a realistic search, review its reports and widen one restriction at a time if results disappoint.

What is confirmed, and what is advice?

FM27’s Recruitment controls and Tactical Effectiveness reports are current official features. Older SI manuals explain the foundations; exact focus options, report timing and availability should be checked in your own game.

Reviewed 2 November 2026. Examples are fictional unless stated otherwise. Suggested routines are coaching recommendations, not guaranteed engine rules.

Start with these three decisions

  1. Audit the squad before opening a search.
  2. Separate immediate needs from development targets.
  3. Check fees, wages, interest and registration together.

Write a brief a scout can actually solve

A useful brief describes the position, the work in both phases, the required level, the deadline and the constraints. “A midfielder who can receive under pressure and protect the left side, ready this summer” is more actionable than “a five-star midfielder”. Keep a second choice for every urgent vacancy.

Use three lanes: a first-team vacancy, affordable cover and a longer-term prospect. Give each a different urgency and acceptable risk. A development target can wait for more evidence; a deadline-day emergency cannot consume the same process.

Set up the operation in six decisions

  1. Own the decisions

Check who creates focuses, assigns scouts, handles reports and negotiates. Delegation works better when you know which decision you still control.

  2. Respect the search range

Check the club’s available scouting range, package and scouting budget. These are constraints on the search, separate from the money available for a transfer or wage offer.

  3. Choose reachable markets

Start where the club has useful knowledge and realistic recruitment access. A small operation usually benefits from fewer clear priorities rather than broad searches it cannot follow up.

  4. Set a sensible focus

In Recruitment, use the current focus controls for the relevant position, level and market. Avoid combining a tiny region, narrow age band, exceptional quality and very low cost unless you accept few results.

  5. Review evidence, not stars alone

Read the strengths, concerns, uncertainty and tactical fit. Scout opinions are assessments in your club context, not exact CA/PA measurements or promises of performance.

  6. Confirm the deal conditions

Check interest, contract situation, wage demands, agent costs, work permits and registration before treating a name as a viable signing. Maintain alternatives until the deal is complete.

A cheap fee can hide an expensive signing

Fictional example: you have €3m of transfer funds and €15,000 per week of wage room. A €2.5m player wanting €20,000 per week does not fit merely because the fee is affordable. A free transfer may still require wages, bonuses and agent or signing costs.

Write down immediate cash, future instalments, annual wages and likely extras separately. Weekly wage multiplied by 52 gives a simple annual base-wage comparison, not the full employment cost. Leave room for renewals and emergencies rather than spending the last available euro on your first option.

No results? Diagnose the search.

  • Check that the focus is active, assigned and within your available range; inspect the report queue.
  • Widen one restrictive filter, then compare what changes. Do not change five constraints and lose the explanation.
  • Distinguish a player not existing in the loaded career from an existing player your club does not know or cannot realistically sign.
  • A database setting, search package, limited knowledge or unrealistic brief can all reduce discoveries. An empty report is not proof there are no suitable players anywhere.

Review priorities weekly, not every hour

Our recommended weekly review is short: which vacancy is still urgent, which reports need follow-up and which shortlist names have become unrealistic? Reassign resources when the need changes. This is an operating routine, not a guaranteed FM27 reporting interval.

Near a deadline, use known alternatives and direct checks rather than assuming a new broad focus will finish in time. Outside the window, keep useful development monitoring alive and remove stale targets that no longer match your plan.

Use our database as a lead, not a transfer promise

Our public recruitment pages provide starting points. Savegame Scout opens the supported records from your own saved career locally in the browser. It does not replace the game’s scouting network, calculate a guaranteed willingness to join or read live match memory. Hidden CA/PA should remain an intentional choice.

EVIDENCE BEHIND THE ADVICE

Sources & edition notes

Official FM27 announcements establish current changes. Earlier manuals are labelled by edition and provide background, rather than proof that old menus or formulas still apply.

Quick answers

Why does my focus find nobody?

Check assignment, range, knowledge and how restrictive the brief is. Widen one condition and allow the operation to produce reports; no universal completion time is promised.

Is the scouting budget my transfer budget?

They serve different purposes. Search coverage and assignments need resources, while the signing also needs affordable fees, wages and other terms.

Can Savegame Scout guarantee a player will join?

No. Use the in-game report, interest checks, negotiations and registration rules to establish whether a transfer is realistic.
