THE REASON TO CARE
Athletic Club: identity first
Athletic’s philosophy centres on players born in the Basque territories or developed through Basque academies. Preserve that identity and use the game’s own eligibility checks when recruiting.
Your opening moves
- Inspect positional depth before choosing a system. In a restricted market, adapting to your players can be more effective than searching endlessly for a specialist.
- Protect promising players with sensible contracts and a planned pathway. Avoid signing a senior backup who blocks the one prospect you need to develop.
- Keep a rolling shortlist of eligible players for each role and check availability before a first-team sale.
Give the save its own rules.
- Respect the eligibility rules implemented in the database.
- No editor workarounds to sign ineligible players.
- Use academy promotion before an external signing when the quality gap is manageable.
A career worth following
- Season one: give a new academy player a consistent role.
- Medium term: compete for domestic honours without diluting the philosophy.
- Final goal: win the Champions League with a club-trained captain.
The trap to avoid
An injury in a specialist position can be difficult to solve through the market. Train versatile backups before you need them.
Check before you start
Confirm the club’s division, player availability, finances, competition rules, and database version. Keep an untouched opening save. If your database differs from the premise, adapt the challenge and record the change rather than quietly editing the game world.
